The Electrical Equipment Company is founded by George Foerstner in Amana, Iowa.
1936
Amana appliances begins manufacturing cold storage lockers for grocery stores and restaurants and is renamed Amana Refrigeration.
1941 – 1945
Amana appliances produces walk-in coolers for the U.S. military. Recognized by the Army and the Navy with the prestigious “E” for excellence award.
1947
Amana appliances is the first to market an upright freezer for the home.
1949
Amana appliances introduces its first top freezer/refrigerator combo
1954
Amana appliances patents the first self-defrost refrigerator.
1955
Amana appliances patents its Free-O’-Frost™ system.
1956
Amana appliances begins marketing Amana® Deep freeze® freezers and begins manufacturing central air conditioning systems for the home.
1957
Amana appliances introduces its first bottom-freezer refrigerator.
1960
Amana appliances offers the first refrigerator/freezer with changeable decorator front.
1963
Amana appliances is the first to offer a five-year warranty on refrigerators.
1967
Amana appliances introduces the Radarange®, the first 115-volt countertop microwave oven for the home.
1968
The Amana appliances “refrigerator within a refrigerator” — a temperature-controlled storage drawer — is introduced.
1975
Amana appliances offers the industry’s first line of low-energy, top-mount refrigerators. The company also produces the first microprocessor-controlled microwave with Touchmatic® touch controls.
1977
Amana appliances unveils the patented Rotawave® microwave oven cooking system that evenly distributes microwaves in the oven cavity for faster, more even microwave cooking.
1982
Amana appliances begins to manufacture washers and dryers.
1984
Amana appliances introduces the first microwave oven to incorporate cooking algorithms and a scale to automatically determine cooking times.
1988
Amana appliances becomes the first U.S. manufacturer of quartz halogen cooktops. Built-in style refrigerators and the industry’s first 24-inch freestanding refrigerator are introduced.
1989
Amana appliances markets the first refrigerator with see-through interior storage organizers.
1992
Amana appliances Gas cooktops with burners installed directly through the cooktop surface are introduced by Amana.
1993
Amana appliances becomes the first U.S. manufacturer of a commercial microwave oven with a scanner to read bar-coded cooking instructions.
1993
Amana appliances introduces the first clothes dryer with a stainless steel cylinder, reversible door, and the largest door opening in the industry.
1995
Amana appliances is first in the industry to eliminate CFCs in its complete line of refrigerators, nearly a year ahead of the federal deadline to do so.
1996
Amana appliances introduces its first 84" high deluxe built-in bottom-freezer refrigerators and the industry’s first 70" high built-in bottom-freezer refrigerators.
2000
Amana appliances introduces The Big Oven™ with a 5.14 cu. ft. capacity – the largest capacity, standard-size, 30" oven in the industry.
2001
Amana appliances rolls out the industry’s first refrigerator with a built-in messaging center and LCD display and the first simultaneous ice and water dispensing side-by-side refrigerator.
2002
Amana appliances offers the industry’s first bottom-freezer refrigerator with internal water dispensing.
2003
Amana appliances unveils its biggest bottom-freezer yet — the 25 cu. ft. Big Easy Reach™ Plus refrigerator and the 5.22 cu. ft. capacity oven.
